01 / Understanding the idea
The metaverse describes a vision of shared digital spaces where people can interact with environments, content and one another. An avatar represents you in a virtual world, giving you a way to move through it and participate alongside other people.
It is useful to think of this as a broad idea, rather than one application or a single world created by Meta. Different platforms offer different experiences, and the vision of connected worlds extends beyond any one company. Meta’s own explanation makes that distinction clear.

The appeal is participation: being able to explore a setting, interact with its content and share an experience. The possibilities range from everyday conversations to situations that would be hard to recreate in the physical world.
Social Interaction
Meet friends as avatars, explore an unfamiliar world or take part in a game together. The setting can turn a conversation into a shared activity, giving people new places to discover and challenges to enjoy together.
Live Gatherings
Imagine joining a virtual music event, exhibition or gathering. Instead of only watching a stream, participants can move through a shared space, encounter other people and enjoy the atmosphere together from different locations.
Simulated Training
A virtual environment can let learners explore places or practise activities that are difficult to access in person. Simulations can illustrate a process, demonstrate an experiment or create a setting for guided practice.
Spatial Workspaces
Shared spaces can support meetings, presentations and conversations around 3D content. A team can discuss a design while looking at the same digital object from different perspectives, sharing ideas and exploring details together.
03 / How you experience it
The way you enter a virtual world changes how you experience it. Access depends on the platform: some experiences use a computer screen, while others are designed for a VR headset. A headset does not automatically work with every virtual world.
Through a screen
A desktop experience shows the virtual environment on a monitor. You navigate using keyboard and mouse controls, viewing your avatar through an on-screen camera.
Through virtual reality
A VR headset places the view around you and responds as you move. Tracked controllers or hand tracking let you reach out, grab objects and interact directly in 3D space.
Visual quality, tracking, sound and feedback all contribute to immersion. Haptic devices can add sensations to supported experiences, but the hardware and the application need to work together.

Virtual worlds also give people a place to create. Environments, avatar clothing, artwork and interactive objects can become part of the experience. Some platforms use NFTs to represent particular digital items; Decentraland, for example, supports linking eligible NFTs to avatar wearables.
What you can create, use or carry into another experience depends on the platform and its rules. Digital items and NFTs are one part of some virtual worlds, rather than the defining feature of every immersive experience.
Decentraland gives creators tools for building scenes, worlds and avatar wearables. It is one example of a virtual environment shaped by content from its community, where individual ideas contribute to the places people explore.
The Sandbox centres on user-created games and experiences, with tools for making voxel assets and publishing interactive content. It illustrates another approach to building and participating in a virtual world.
For a business or creator, the useful starting point is the experience you want people to have. Decide who it is for, what they should be able to do and how they will access it, then choose the technology that supports those goals.
